If any of you ever pay attention to the things I actually write on here, and not just the adorable puppy pictures I post, you have probably gathered that I’m thoroughly outraged by the “War on Women” that has been going on all over the US lately. I firmly believe that everyone should have access to birth control and reproductive health care, whatever that includes. I suppose you can call me pro-choice. 

I also firmly believe that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. Some people object to birth control. That’s fine, don’t use it. Don’t you dare presume to tell me that I can’t though.

HOWEVER.

IF you are going to lecture me on how I take care of my own body, then I EXPECT you to understand basic reproductive science. Please note that:

• A sperm comes from a man. It contains 50% of the genetic material of a potential fetus.
• An egg comes from a woman. It too contains 50% of the genetic material of a potential fetus.
• A fetus is the result of a sperm fertilizing an egg and implanting in a woman’s uterus. I know there are multiple technical terms for the various stages of prenatal development, but I don’t need to get that technical here. A fetus is NOT what is released during a woman’s menstrual cycle! That would be an egg. An egg is not enough genetic material to become a human being. 

Why do I bring this up? Because I recently had an argument over the internet with someone who was INSISTING that a fetus is what is released during the menstrual cycle, and therefore all menstruation needs to be prevented to save the lives of all these children that are flushed down the toilet every month.

…WHAT.

THE.

FUCK.

I can’t even comprehend this. “Prevent” the menstrual cycle? There are two ways to do this, folks.

1. Pregnancy
2. BIRTH CONTROL

I don’t…I can’t…I just…

What?!

If this is the basis of the argument of the entire pro-life, anti-birth control side of the country, I think I will be moving to Canada.
